RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Press lays the foundation for a university-wide publishing program
Arriving at RIT in 1979, David Pankow brought a clear vision to his new responsibilities. As librarian and then curator of the Cary Graphic Arts Collection, he facilitated the sharing of its resources with students, faculty and scholars. Almost immediately, Pankow sensed another opportunity. “It seemed a shame that there was no other mechanism for the Cary Collection to reach people outside the RIT environment,” he says. The collection, housed in RIT’s Wallace Library, is a nationally recognized center dedicated to the history and practice of printing. Read the press release
RIT's Artwork and Architecture-A Real Page-turner
There is much more to the architecture of the Rochester Institute of Technology campus than its millions of bricks. From internationally renowned artist Albert Paley's monumental sculpture, The Sentinel, to the many works of art featured in RIT's art galleries, there are dozens of treasures featured in the new publication, View It! The Art and Architecture of RIT. View It!, featuring an art guide and walking tour, highlights a selection of 40 public artworks held at RIT. It is a pilot publication by RIT's Cary Graphic Arts Press, the publishing arm of the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection. The Cary Collection is one of the country's premier libraries on the history and practice of printing. Read the press release
“The Uncommon Denominator” Opens at RIT's Dyer Arts Center, Sept. 10
At Rochester Institute of Technology, Richard Hirsch has achieved professional recognition both as a ceramic artist and teacher. The fall exhibition at the Joseph F. and Helen C. Dyer Arts Center-located in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf-will feature works by Hirsch and former students who have achieved notable success in their own careers. Hirsch-a professor in RIT's School for American Crafts since 1987-has spent the last three decades teaching the complexities of his craft to many of the 38 artists featured in the show. Some of these former students attended the Program in Artisanry at Boston University, where Hirsch taught from 1975 to 1986. Read the press release
Images from Science Exhibition Opens in Chicago Jan. 24
Images from Science opens at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago on Friday, Jan. 24. This is the first opening for this traveling exhibition since it debuted at RIT’s upstate New York campus last October. The show is scheduled to run through April 7. To accompany the display, the Cary Graphic Arts Press, the publishing arm of RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection, has produced a full-color catalog. The publication features an introduction by David Malin, world-renowned astronomical photographer from the Anglo-Australian Observatory.. Read the press release
Science and Photography to Converge in International Exhibition at RIT
This fall, RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences, among the premier schools for photographic education in the United States, hosts Images from Science. The international exhibition will feature photographs submitted in various scientific disciplines including astronomy, biology, engineering, geology, medicine, oceanography and physics. RIT photography professors Michael Peres and Andrew Davidhazy are coordinating this first-of-its-kind event. Peres, chair of RIT’s biomedical photography program, initially proposed the idea last year after an exhibition of his work. Read the press release
RIT Professor Merges Past with Present in Photography Book
Fans of photography and European culture are being treated to a "double take" on historic Italy. Willie Osterman, associate professor of photography at Rochester Institute of Technology, shares visual reflections of yesterday and today in his new book Déjà View: Bologna, Italy. The book provides a tour of Bologna through historic photographs, some dating back more than 100 years, and images taken by Osterman of the same subjects from exactly the same locations. The photos are placed side-by-side to provide viewers a comparison of past and present. The photographer’s painstaking attention to detail is apparent from one page to the next. RIT’s Cary Collection Opens New Chapter on Digital Book Design
It’s a virtual treasure chest of books, manuscripts and artifacts dating back to the early days of printing. Now, the caretakers of the famed Cary Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology are tying the past to advances in present-day publishing. Digital Book Design and Publishing is a groundbreaking text produced by Cary Graphic Arts Press, the publishing arm of the Cary Collection. Written by noted photographer and book artist Douglas Holleley, the book covers all the essentials of digital bookmaking—from mock-ups and materials, through image processing and layout to printing and bookbinding. It also features a rich selection of full-color illustrations reproduced from both historical and contemporary books, as well as various explanatory diagrams. Read the press release
