Mother Daughter

by Elaine O'Neil, Julia Hess, Deborah Willis, Perri Klass, Sheila Solomon Klass
Price: $49.95

Through daily portraits, this five-year project charts the physical and emotional changes of two women at the opposite ends of the “young woman” spectrum. One was moving with excitement into adolescence; the other, with trepidation, into middle age. Each day, Elaine and Julia stopped their separate activities and met in their living room to pose for a portrait. They made 1,800 images—not truly comprehending the catalogue of energy and exhaustion, privacy and revelation, unexpected coincidences of mood and emotions that they created.

“Who has not examined her own face in the mirror, searching for signs of aging? Who has not scrutinized her mother or her daughter, searching for bits of herself like a treasure hunt? Elaine O’Neil and Julia Hess’s fascinating project will connect with these impulses in every woman. Judging from reactions to my book You’re Wearing THAT? I have no doubt that women will leap at the chance to see themselves reflected in these startling and artful images.”
—Deborah Tannen, University Professor and professor of linguistics at Georgetown University; author of You’re Wearing THAT?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation

"Phyllis Kitt’s God’s Country is a landscape of church halls, chapels, bell towers, and steeples. Her photographs and informed, stylish text enlighten and delight us as she guides us through her God’s world. No architectural detail escapes her notice. We in the twenty-first century are in debt to her, as we are to the devout congregations, ministers, building committees, and architects, whether known or unknown, who bequeathed us such a wide-ranging panoply of architectural treasures.” —Stuart Bolger, Director Emeritus Genesee Country Village and Museum

The Day of the Dead / Dia De Los Muertos

by Ward S. Albro, Denis Defibaugh
Price: $39.95

The people of Oaxaca, Mexico, believe the souls of the dead, the antepasados, return every year for a twenty-four-hour visit. They are welcomed into their former homes with gaily decorated altars and offerings of food and gifts. Then they are escorted back to their resting places in the cemeteries. In recent years, Dia de los Muertos has become widely known not only throughout Mexico but also in the United States, drawing tourists in large numbers.
